Gomer Pyle
|
Dutch space-rockers Gomer Pyle start out as a grunge outfit back in 1994. With some clever songs and a few decent gigs around the country Gomer Pyle get the attention of Elegy Records and even 3FM (dutch national radio), who invite the band to play a nightly session for a notorious radio-show by DJ and enfant terrible Giel Beelen. In 1999 Elegy Records release Eurohappy, Gomer Pyle's official debutalbum. They undertake a series of gigs to promote the album, but as time passes by, things start to get a little quiet. By then, the band is still an active unit but only within the confines of their own rehearsal room. Every now and then a few songs pop up and get thrown out into the world as promo stuff, but not much happens. In 2005, Sander Evers, drummer in that other dutch psy-rock band 35007, joins Gomer Pyle. This move gives the band a much needed energy boost, and new ideas rush in like never before. After a few gigs it becomes clear that the band are drifting away from their grunge roots and are starting to shift towards what some might call stonerrock. Call it what you want, but Gomer Pyle play heavy, groovy rock with a lot of psychedelic atmosphere added to their music. With Sander, three songs are recorded for a promotional release. This promo is brought to the attention of wellknown booker/musician/scenester Bidi, who gets the band some shows, giving them some exposure. In the meantime the band continuously works on new songs and structures. By 2007 enough material has been written to produce a full length album. But what is an album release without the support of a cool label? Again Bidi jumps in and introduces the band to SpaceJam Records, an initiative by Bidi and Marcel from Astrosoniq. This is the starting shot for the recordings of the album which now bears the title Idiots Savants. The album contains a diverse range of styles and moods; Heavy Stoner, Doom, Tripped Out soundscapes and some more regular song based material. All recorded with studio trickery by longtime friend and studio freak Danny Gras. With Idiots Savants the band exceed all that they have done before. This album is the mind-boggling headphone trip that you've always wanted to experience. A perfect soundtrack to long distance road trips. Come July the band will rock the well known German stoner festival Stoned From The Underground, after which they plan to hit the scene with the new album and lots of gigs. So come and bear witness to the proceedings...... ... |
